5 Things To Do This Summer
July 15, 2010 by Ashley

Summer is my favorite season by far but as quickly as it comes it goes. So it is extremely important to savor ever minute of this beautiful season. During the summer many people like to have barbeques and go on vacation. Here are 5 things you can do to get the most of your summer…
When people think of summer the word beach usually comes to mind but in Harrisburg we have the privilage of being near Susquehanna River. Go there and participate in one of the many activities or just relax for a nice day out with people you love.
Eat a Popsicle
Channel your inner child and eat a Popsicle. While you’re at it, eat three or four — or the whole box(well maybe not the whole box). Popsicles are usually pretty low in calories and aren’t much more than frozen fruit juice. It’s a great way to cool off on a hot day.
Get a (Natural) Tan
Why spend all that money on fake tans and tanning memberships. It costs too much and you will get a much better looking glow from the real sun. Although you can get too much of a good thing, don’t worry about the sun’s damaging effects — wear sunscreen and just go for that sun-kissed glow.
Attend a Summer Concert
Many really big artist are touring this year but if you want something local check out Central Pennsylvania Friends of Jazz and find a concert near the river. You can also attend Harrisburg’s internationally known symphony orchestra.
Educate Yourself
School is out for summer but that doesn’t mean you have to stop learning. Visit John Harris Mansion to discover three centuries of history plus three floors of archaeology, history and art, and a star-gazer’s heavenly planetarium. They offer free guided tours so stop by today!
Your Turn: What do you have planned for the summer?
The Snack ~ Shy Ronnie

It’s time for my weekly ‘Snack!’ For those of you who don’t know ‘The Snack’ is my version of ‘The Soup’ where I share one of my favorite clips from television or the web with you.
Last week nominations for the Emmy Awards came out and that inspired this week’s clip. Pop singer Rihanna and actor/comedian Andy Sandberg’s has a very funny skit called “Shy Ronnie” that appeared on SNL a while ago. It was so funny that it was nominated for an Emmy Award.

T-Mobile Sidekick Gets Kicked To The Curb

I have friends who absolutely love their T-Mobile Sidekick but unfortunately I have to break the news to them that T-Mobile has decided to stop selling the phone as of last week.
I remember when the Sidekick was the hottest thing since sliced bread. It was being taken down the red carpet with celebrities and in magazines now even the newest version that came out last year is only $50 now.
For those people who can’t let go of their Sidekick, don’t worry T-Mobile says it’ll still offer service and support for your phone.
The Sidekick has gone through it’s set of issues like the Sidekick server meltdown hit, leaving millions of Sidekick users without access to the e-mail or contacts for days, or even weeks in some cases. I think that started the trend downward.
There is talk that T-Mobile will revive the Sidekick in the near future with an Android version. Only time will tell.
Were you Team Sidekick? What do you think of T-Mobile’s decision to stop selling the phone?

Laundry Tips for Those Perfect Pair of Jeans

I feel like I end up buying jeans more than any other clothing item. They tend to shrink, fade, and get torn some kind of way over time. I was recently reading an article about some laundry tips and they gave some really good advice on washing jeans. Check it out…
Wash jeans in cold water. Most denim is top-dyed, meaning only the surface of the fibers is colored. To keep jeans from fading or acquiring white streaks, wash in small loads in cold water (with more water than clothes) with all-purpose detergent.Stretch the legs to prevent shrinkage. Hold them by the waistband and legs and gently stretch them vertically before drying. Dry on low or medium heat; overdrying causes unnecessary wear and tear, so take jeans out when the legs are done but the seams and the waistband are slightly damp.
Did these tips help you? Do you have some tips and tricks of laundry that you use?

Learn to Moonwalk like MJ

On this day many people all across the world are celebrating the life of Michael Jackson, the greatest Pop artist to ever live.
Today you can listen to Michael Jackson’s music or watch his videos or wear your favorite MJ paraphenelia.
One of Michaels most memorable contributions to the world was in 1987 when he performed on Motown 25 and showed the world the Moonwalk for the first time. He actually learned the dance from kids on the street.
The moonwalk or backslide is a dance technique that presents the illusion of the dancer being pulled backwards while attempting to walk forward
He even taught his pet monkey Bubbles how to moonwalk…
If Bubbles can learn it so can you…
Snuggle Up With A Scary Movie

A movie is the perfect way to relax on a random day to just get away from all the stress and monotony of your life. Every Tuesday Redbox releases new movies and this week the scary movie The Strangers comes out.
I saw this movie in the theatres and it was really really great! It’s about a couple staying in an isolated vacation house. They receive a knock at the door late at night and from there it all goes down hill. I won’t spill any spoilers but it is definitely worth renting.

Celebrating The Real Meaning of Memorial Day

As I celebrated a day off from work and spending time with friends who were in town for Memorial Day I found that most of the celebration for Memorial Day has nothing to do with the purpose of the holiday. Now, it’s all about parting and having barbeques, and pool parties and there is hardly mention of the troops.
One of my favorite artist Trey Songz, came out with a video that showed a small portion of what this holiday is about. Check it out…
Trey Songz is usually about the sexy songs but he got really deep into this one and pulled out a great message for the season. It reminds us of what people go through everyday. What do you think of the video?
3 Bad Things Gone Good

I believe there is a positive side to just about everything, even things that are deemed bad habits. While things in excess are bad taking in a little bit of everything can really be good for you. Take a look at 3 bad habits that can actually be good for you.
1. Sunlight: While too much of Mr. Golden Sun can lead to melanoma and other serious types of skin cancers, catching a few UVB rays each day offers healthy benefits, in addition to a glow. Dermatologist say 10 to 15 minutes of sun exposure – without sunscreen – can generate a day’s worth of vitamin D, which our bodies need. Vitamin D has been found to help us absorb calcium, maintain strong bones and also ward off osteoporosis and high blood pressure. If you have a pale complexion and need to load up on the SPF 50, you can get your vitamin D from the foods you eat, such as eggs, fish and fortified milk.
2. Coffee: You do not have to completely ban the java – just drink it responsibly. The Journal of the American Medical Association reported that coffee has been known to decrease the likelihood of Parkinson’s Disease – at least in men. The National Institute of Health reported a positive relationship between coffee consumption and a reduced risk of Type-2 diabetes as well.
3. Watching a hilarious YouTube video at work: This is my favorite one because I do it all the time. It’s not slacking off if you’re viewing a funny video in the middle of the afternoon. Laughter has a string of healthy benefits, including increased blood flow and relaxation. Doctors recommend 15 minutes of the giggles a day for the biggest bang for your chuckle. In a study by Vanderbilt University, laughing burned 50 calories in 10 to 15 minutes. So take that break and enjoy a good, hard laugh – any way you can get it.
What other bad habit do you think is really good?
